This website looks like possibly the worst way to read George Orwell (or anyone else). Links to individual chapters, text in a narrow (and non-adjustable) column, a search function that doesn't work...

Just buy the book, or borrow it from a library.



The Copyright 2003 footer should tell you everything you need to know about why the website looks the way it does.


We had functional search on web sites in 2003 (arguably even better than today), so someone must have broken it after it had been implemented.


solr* of that era was a pain to keep running. I'd guess that's what they used?

No idea, but it looks like a routing issue, it doesn't even hit the search engine. They've probably disabled all dynamic (PHP) code.

Fortunately Google search still works well:
